Take Route 78 North and cross the Erie Canal and continue to Ontario Street (one intersection north of the four-way stop where Funeral Home is on left and Niagara Hotel on right). Turn right onto Ontario Street. Parking is available behind the church, on Ontario Street, or in the Municipal Parking lot on Church Street. For details and a map click here.
Sunday School classes are offered each Sunday from 9:30 to 10:20, during the school year, with classes for preschool through 9th grade (high school students assist with the younger grades or attend Sunday Forum). These classes are taught by members of the congregation. Through a variety of learning activities, students discover how the scripture lessons apply to their own lives. The weekly lessons also prepare children to participate in worship and help to increase understanding of both the scripture for the day and the sermon. The instructional units are tied to the seasons of the church year.
A confirmation class is offered for ninth graders and older young people preparing to join the church as adult members at the end of the school year. Course work includes study and discussion of the meaning of Confirmation and Commissioning, an overview of the Bible, some church history, study of the Sacraments, worship, the mission of the church, stewardship, the Creeds and Confessions, and church government of the Presbyterian Church (USA). Class members participate in work projects and attend the worship services in other churches.
Return to TopThe Sunday Forum, for youth and adults, meets during the Sunday Christian Education Hour to pursue various topics of study or interest. The length of time spent on each topic varies from a single Sunday, to several weeks. Generally, each session is a complete unit, so that it is possible to begin attending the class at any time during the year. The study leader may be one of the pastors, a member of the congregation or a local expert. Classes are always interesting, and it's a nice activity for parents with children in Sunday School class.
Return to TopWe are blessed with a very talented and active music department with activities for all ages and for vocal and/or handbells.
Ruth Circle is a group of golden age women who meet for study and companionship. The meetings are hosted at the church on the 3rd Tuesday of the month at 1:00 PM. Group members take turns for leading and hosting meetings.
Return to TopLockport First Presbyterian has several active groups for teens.
Through the generosity of Eugenia Arnold, the Moeller organ was purchased and the chancel area was substantially renovated to accommodate its installation in 1950. (Previous organs were located in the rear balcony.) Dr. Roberta Bitgood played the dedicatory recital on November 5, 1950. The instrument contained 42 ranks of pipes distributed over 3 manual with provision for an Antiphonal division to be added later.
During the 1980s much releathering and repair of the pitman chests was accomplished with funds from the newly established Standish-Farley Fund for the maintenance of the church's pipe organ. The Great division was also entirely revoiced by Heritage Pipe Organ Company of Buffalo, NY.
The Antiphonal Division, also manufactured by Heritage Pipe Organs, was installed in the rear balcony in 1991 through the generosity of the William Rand Kenan, Jr. Charitable Trust. It contains 7 ranks including a hooded trumpet on high wind pressure. The new division was dedicated on October 20, 1991 with a recital by John Mitchener, Kenan organ scholar at the Eastman School of Music.
Currently, plans are underway to modernize the switching systems and combination action by installing new solid state components. The organ has traditionally been lifted out of its "pit" location for recitals, but, due to the age of the wooden platform, it is no longer prudent to do so. We look forward to a new organ lift and solid state mechanics to bring Niagara County's largest pipe organ into its next half century of service.
Contributions to the organ maintenance fund are used exclusively for major repairs to the organ.
Return to TopWe are fortunate to have six windows that are original Tiffany windows, made by the Tiffany Company, plus six windows made of Tiffany glass. Tiffany used unusual construction techniques and effects that produced stunning results. These included: cutting the glass first, then cutting the leading; use of strong colors; layering colored glass over another colored glass; application of color in streaks or dry-brushing the color on the surface; pulling and pushing glass while it cools to produce a Drapery Glass. These techniques and effects are well represented in the wonderful windows, treasured at First Presbyterian Church.
You may come and see the windows "in person". Individuals or groups are always welcome (for large groups, call to arrange a time in advance) and may come from 9:15 am- 2:00 pm, Monday through Friday, a self-guided audio interpretive wand system is available. Allow at least 45 minutes for viewing.
For a "virtual" tour of the church windows, click on each below. Large graphic files were required to adequately capture and display these pictures. Expect a transmission delay. Be sure to press the Back button on your browser to return here after viewing each window.
Meets the third Thursday of each month in Grigg Parlor with Elder Karen Seyfert.
